Margo McMahon

Margo E. McMahon, Ed.D. is currently the Human Rights Coordinator for the DMH Central West Area Office, as well as a Wellness Recovery Educator and Certified Advanced Level Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) Facilitator. Dr. McMahon is an individual with lived cross-disability, trauma and addiction recovery experience. She first became active in the mental health, trauma and addictions recovery movement in the mid-1970’s. In 1985, she organized and founded Women Finding A Voice, the first women’s self-help advocacy group in Western MA and the New England Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) Support Network for women trauma survivors. She is a member of Star Light Clubhouse in Northampton and worked on the development of the Western MA Recovery Learning Community, as well as Afiya House the state’s first Peer Run Respite. She attended her first introduction to WRAP at the former Northampton State Hospital in 1998, her first training at Boston University in 2000 and has been active with the Copeland Center ever since.

Dr. McMahon has worked as a practitioner, manager, educator and consultant in the mental health and cross-disability field for over 25 years. She has provided consultation and training locally and nationally on numerous topics related to human rights, trauma, recovery, spirituality and cross-disability advocacy. Her recent work focuses on increasing the awareness of the value of peer support, Mary Ellen Copeland’s Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), along with the importance of Medical and Mental Health Advance Care Planning and Advance Directives through unique collaborative trainings involving individuals with lived experience in mental health, trauma, and addictions recovery and professionals working together. She co-authored a workbook on Advance Directives entitled: Important Information About Myself with Mary Ellen Copeland, Ph.D. and Mary Ellen Foti, MD.
