Popular television shows give the impression that we “Hoarders” collect our junk because we are greedy, lazy, incompetent, and out of touch with reality.  On the contrary, collectors are often creative, intelligent, and resourceful, perhaps only unsuccessful in the pursuit of moderation.  We are Finders and Keepers who are stuck, hung-up on something emotional, something unseen beneath the surface of life.  What can be seen is merely the tip of the proverbial stuff-berg.  It’s complicated.

Our difficulty de-cluttering isn’t really about the stuff; it’s about what our possessions represent.  Our collections are disorganized piles of memories tied-up in overstock and stacked to the ceiling in plastic bins.  We save our stuff for many reasons, but we don’t necessarily have time to figure those reasons out.  Many of us are under pressure, by law or love, to clean-up.  We’ve come to realize that it doesn’t matter whether you collect lead or gold—too much of anything is a problem.

Millions of people’s lives are affected in negative ways by the volume of stuff that they’ve acquired.  Isolation, frustration, loss of hope…..eviction, divorce, debt, fire.  The potential is there to lose both life and love. 

The potential is also there to regain these things!  Joy, celebration, peace of mind, good company to share a cup of tea with, and the space to share it with them; these things are also a part of the cycle, and they are there for you, and you deserve them.  You’re a good person.  You’ve just got too much stuff.
